TEAM CHAO PHRAYA
Our Nak Muay Team are now in preparation for their respective fights and their first outing will be at the Tower Ballroom on Sunday September 28th 2008.
- Kru Leigh Edlin returns to the ring and will be fighting full Muay Thai rules and it is hoped that this will be for an English or British title.
- Nak Muay Samir Hidalgo will be fighting ‘C’ class following his win in Bedford
- Nak Muay Ben Tull will be stepping out for the first time for his debut ‘C’ class fight
- Nak Muay Tony Hewson will be making his debut ‘C’ class fight
- Nak Muay Steve Johns will also be making his debut ‘C’ Class fight
So all being well, injury free and opponents willing, we have a strong team stepping out for Chao Phraya Muay Thai – the work starts now!

MUAY THAI LEGENDS
On Saturday 16TH August Chao Phraya Muay Thai will be attending the Muay Thai Legends show at the Fairfield concert hall in Croydon. I have already sold 19 tickets so only 6 remain and it looks promising that we will have a 25 strong group for what will be an excellent feast of Muay Thai – England v Thailand…. I can’t wait!

GRADINGS
Our last gradings held back in May saw a total of 27 students test for their respective grades. The standard was excellent and discipline was very commendable. Students from Chao Phraya Lincoln and Chao Phraya Cambridgeshire all performed exceptionally well and I am pleased to say everyone passed their grades.
The next grading will be held late October.

NEW CLASS
A new class has now opened. I have opened up our ‘fighting fit©’ class to the general public and this will be held every Thursday at the Aries room in the St. Ivo recreation centre from 6.30pm – 7.30pm. The class, initially designed for our fighters, is an hour long fitness based Thai pad workout of 5 rounds with a 30 second break, in addition to warm up and cool down routines there are also several ‘Thai pad’ drills that are incorporated to the end of every session, The class has been designed to enhance aerobic fitness and burn fat and our motto is ‘Become Fighting fit, without the hit™’. The class has already started to attract new members and is busy for this time of year so I envisage a maximum of 30 students per session, so arrive early to ensure your place.
This exciting and energising workout costs only £4.00 and a second class will open very soon.

REFEREEING & JUDGING
As if having my debut as a professional referee at the famous York Hall, London was not enough, I refereed 16 fights which included Southern area, English, European and World title fights. Two weeks later I refereed, judged and cornered at the Tower ballroom in Birmingham. This was a great experience and an equally great learning curve, more to come.

THAILAND TRIP - NOVEMBER 2008
On or around the 1st November I will be travelling with Chao Phraya Nak Muay to Thailand. This will be primarily a training trip to Chiang Mai. We will be making a short stop in Bangkok to acclimatise first followed by 12 days in Chiang Mai where we will be training at Lanna camp and the Lanna hill camp. Kru Leigh Edlin will be training to fight a Thai, full rules while there. More details to follow in the coming weeks.

BEDFORD SHOW 20TH APRIL
It has been a hard road of training for our Nak Muay who started 6 days per week training from the 2nd of January taking in 4 interclubs along the way, calling in on K-star Birmingham, Shin-Kick Woking, Sandy Holt’s Wigan and finally Bad Company in Leeds. A few injuries along the way, Marcus Hill picking up 3 broken ribs but still turning up for training unfortunately and coincidently his opponent was also injured in the ribs and had to pull out. Kevin Hearn could not make the commitment to training due to his shift work so we were left with a team of 3. Alec Badcock ended up with water on the knee and had it drained but it wasn’t going to heal before his fight and just as I was about to pull him out when his opponent withdrew! So the final call was for Maxwell Reynolds & Samir Hidalgo. Not missing one training session, making the weight and looking ripped and strong both Nak Muay stepped out for their debut fights with over 50 Chao Phraya supporters (I sold 50 tickets and more turned up on the door!) cheering them on respectively... Here are the results:
Maxwell Reynolds Chao Phraya v Lewis Kent - Daj Chai 65kg
ROUND 1
Fast start to the round with Maxwell taking the initiative, both fighters attacking with jab cross and body kick combos, Max grabbed for the clinch and was the more aggressive. I edged this round for Max but the judges may have seen it as a draw
ROUND 2
Fast pace again Max was relentless but got caught coming in a couple of times, again busy in the clinch but Lewis was strong and managed to floor Maxwell in one clinch exchange. Max’s work rate was causing some problems for Lewis but he was still strong. I gave this an even round but the judges may have scored it to Lewis.
ROUND 3
All to go for in this round again Max’s work rate was non-stop, unfortunately after two accidental kicks to Lewis’ groin Max was penalised one point. Right at the end of the last round Max walked into a terrific Teep by Lewis and was momentarily floored. He jumped up straight away but it looked as though the referee was going to give an 8 count to Lewis just as the bell went. This round went to Lewis
Great fight and very close, Max did not stop his work rate from the start of round 1. The result was a win for Lewis. However he was made to earn it. Lewis has had 1 amateur win and 1 professional win to his credit and weighed in 2kg heavier than Max, so after only 1 year training and for his debut fight I thought MAX did a tremendous job a nothing more could have been asked from him.
Asking how he felt after he replied “Great, what a fantastic experience! I can’t wait to get training for my next fight”
Samir Hidalgo Chao Phraya v Firaz Khachab - All Stars 69kg
ROUND 1
It was clear from the start that Samir’s opponent, Firaz, had some heavy hands so Samir kept it close entering the clinch from low kicks and punch combos. Like Max before him Samir’s work rate was excellent. Firaz was clearly troubled by Samir in the clinch. I gave Samir this round as did the Judges.
ROUND 2
We briefed Samir to continue attacking in the clinch but to be aware not to get caught going in, to attack with low kick, body kick or punch combos before entering. Samir did just that and another strong round for him. I scored this for Samir again as did the Judges.
ROUND 3
Firaz was not going to make this easy for Samir and attacked with some strong punches which Samir took well and responded with punch and kick combos and again scoring high with knees in the clinch. Samir’s round again
Samir was relentless in every round and looked as though he could have done a five rounder! The result was a unanimous win for Samir on his debut fight.
Samir commented on how good it felt to win but was grounded enough to know he had to work for it.
I was very pleased with both fighters’ performances and both did excellent Wai Kru & Ram Muay.

TOWER BALLROOM SHOW
Team Chao Phraya will be fighting again on the Tower Ballroom show on Sunday 28th September. If all goes to plan this could be one of our biggest yet. Kru Leigh Edlin will be fighting full Thai rules and there is a possibility that this will be for an English title. Also in the mix will be Marcus Hill who will be looking to also fight at full Thai rules and again the possibility of an English title. All this is of course subject to organising the right opponents and just as importantly, that both fighters complete their respective training and make weight. Samir Hidalgo & Maxwell Reynolds will fight their second ‘C’ class fights and Alec Badcock along with Ben Tull will fight in their debut ‘C’ class divisions too.
Big night for the team, the preparations will begin in July. Chock Dee Khrup!

SENI / PAIN & GLORY 2008
Chao Phraya social event at the Seni saw 26 students attending from Chao Phraya Cambridgeshire and Lincoln. This was one amazing day and evening With every type of Martial art exhibited, contests throughout the day, celebrities and World champions conducting seminars. In addition Martial arts equipment, DVD’s and books for sale including T-shirts and clothing. I personally met with Shannon Lee when I donated Combat issue no.1 and Kung Fu Monthly issue no.1 to the Bruce Lee Museum. I was filmed and interviewed for the Bruce Lee foundation and VIP’d to the front of the queue to meet with Shannon. The whole event was held at the London Excel on Saturday 26th April & Sunday 27th April. Plenty of food and drinks available and in the evening the Pain & Glory fight show with Muay Thai, MMA, Kickboxing and K1 was on the menu.

JUDGING AND REFEREEING
Over the past year I have been judging various Muay Thai shows and also refereed over 50 fights at Master Sken’s kick 4 Cancer event in Manchester.
In 2007 I was asked to Judge on both Damien Trainor’s and Liam Harrison’s world title fights but I was in Thailand during those times. The opportunity rose again when Paul Hennessey asked me to be chief Judge on the Frankie Hudders v Tim Thomas World title fight. This was a great privilege and honour and a tough closely fought match which saw Frankie Hudders being crowned World Champion. I also judged 3 British title fights on Steve Logan’s show on 27th April which saw the re-opening of the Tower ballroom.
My experience in judging is growing I have so far judged Area, English, British, Commonwealth, European & World title fights. Kru Sean Toomey has asked me to referee for his Capital punishment show in June and it is at the prestigious York Hall Bethnal Green, where world famous boxers such as Bruno, Eubanks, Watson, Benn etc, etc have fought. As if the venue wasn’t honour enough, the icing on the cake is that I will be refereeing my first World title fight: David Paquette v Cedric Muller and in addition, but yet to be confirmed, I will also be refereeing the European bout: Rob Storey v Yetkin Ozkul.
I am totally looking forward to this!

CHAO PHRAYA LINCOLN - 1 YEAR CELEBRATION
On Tuesday 22nd April I attended Chao Phraya Lincoln class for their 1st year anniversary. Certificates of excellence were awarded to Lincoln Nak Rian and I awarded the Chao Phraya certificate of merit to Kru Leigh for his hard work and dedication over the last year. With over 25 attending per class, a Nak Muay Team in the making and, currently, 3 classes per week Kru Leigh Edlin has done a fantastic job.

Our next gradings are to be held on Saturday 10th May at 11am sharp. So far we have a total of 30 students booked in to grade from both Chao Phraya Cambridgeshire and Lincoln. Remember to bring your licence and fee and turn up at least 15 minutes early.

TEAM CHAO PHRAYA (CAMBRIDGESHIRE) TRAINING SCHEDULE
The following training is compulsory for all Nak Muay team Chao Phraya. Schedules or training days may change but notice will be given in advance. It is the Nak Muay’s responsibility to contact their Kru as to any reason why they cannot make a specific session. Failure to do so may result in their suspension from the team.
Mondays – Muay Thai - 2 hours
Tuesdays – Fitness circuit - 1 hour
Wednesday – Muay Thai - 2 hours

K-STAR INTER CLUB – BIRMINGHAM
On Saturday 26th January a total of 11 fighters from Chao Phraya attended the K-Star interclub in Birmingham.
For some it was their first outing and I would like to personally express a big well done to everyone. Not one fighter looked poor or was outclassed and what was outstanding is that every one of you ‘listened’. As this was my Birthday also it was a great treat to see all of you perform so well.
Fighting that day (Not in order):
Kevin Hearn – After over 4 years out of the game did exceptionally well, great comeback
Alec Badcock – Dominated fight so I restricted him to kicking only in 3rd round
Daniel Bellingham – First outing and totally dominated the fight – Strong kicks
Max Reynolds – Awesome display of clinch work especially in the last round!
James Khan – Experienced fighter who fought a tactically excellent fight
Paul Martin – First outing, looked to be outclassed in first round but fought from the heart and dominated last two rounds (Fight of the day because of this in my opinion)
Samir Hidalgo – Good match up, Samir was relentless in his attack and pursuit, great combos.
Jason Wragg – His best performance yet, dominated every round, strong performance
Tony Hewson – Chao Phraya Lincoln - second outing, class fighter, excellent lateral movement, controlled all rounds
Luke Williamson – Chao Phraya Lincoln - Our youngest fighter at 16, first outing against a tough opponent but gave back what was given to make this a well even match.
Ian Billard – Chao Phraya Lincoln - second outing vast improvement, well matched fight Ian pressing strong throughout, good hand and leg combos.
The team didn’t go unnoticed either as Damien Trainor from K-Star (European & Hong Kong champion) mentioned to me the improvement he saw in our fighters.
Many thanks go to Kru Steve Logan for an excellent interclub as usual and for getting my fighters on early so that I could get off to my Birthday celebrations!

KRU SHAUN’S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
I had a nice meal out with my girlfriend and close friends at the Thai Lounge in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. Excellent Thai food set in a traditional Thai setting.
Surprise birthday cake was brought out by the staff and chefs to a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’. They also spent 2 hours in the day carving a large melon with ‘Happy Birthday - Shaun’ on it, which they also presented to me (but obviously they used the Buddhist calendar for my age!)
A great evening of 3 course food, beer and wine (I had my usual sparkling water) which was topped off with an unexpected gesture of generosity when the head Thai Khun Sam offered the whole evening on the house – all courses, all drinks! I was blown over by this! I have only met Khun Sam and his team once before and this act of kindness is so typically Thai. I was humbled. I will be arranging a Songkran party for Chao Phraya at the Thai Lounge this coming April (No! it won’t be free!)

WOKING INTERCLUB
This was another great ‘day out’ for team Chao Phraya at Kru Jesse Saunders’ Woking Muay Thai academy. All Nak Muay fought with heart and courage and I was very pleased with their performance:
James Khan – Great tactical fight, faultless with his body kicks and scored well throughout. Good countering skills in the third round. One of James’s best performances to date
Daniel Bellingham – Tough fight for only his second outing, his opponent clearly more experienced, stunned Daniel in the 1st with a well timed head kick, but he stood his ground and came back strong in the second using clinching and knees to score well. A hard ‘Baptism by fire’ but one I feel Daniel gained experience from.
Maxwell Reynolds – His opponent was initially up for a scrap! Max scored high in the clinch which nullified his opponent’s forward barrage. Second round saw Max take an accidental knee to the face but he soldiered on and again scored well in the clinch.
Alec Badcock – Both fighters went toe to toe but Alec was superior in the clinch and scored high with knees. Alec told me afterwards that he needed a fight like this to test him out – well, he passed with flying colours!
Samir Hidalgo – Watching Samir’s opponent warm up we knew he would be a long range fighter, so our tactics were to keep the fight at close quarters. Samir did just that scoring well with combo punches and excellent long knees and clinch work. Second round and Samir was knocked down by an excellent teep, Samir acknowledged this and upped the pressure again working close. In the third Samir again was on top until the final 2 seconds when his opponent clipped him with a great head kick, although unfazed Samir acknowledged it. A great fight, possibly the best of the day.
A big well done goes out to all team Chao Phraya who gained more experience and learned lessons from their individual fights, everyone fought well.

CHAO PHRAYA LINCOLN
So far a busy year for Kru Leigh, training his Nak Muay team for their respective interclubs, running two academies and opening up our first R.A.F academy as I write this (full report next month). Chao Phraya Lincoln is coming up to its first year and is going from strength to strength through the dedication of Kru Leigh and the commitment of his students and fighters. Kru Leigh himself has suffered a minor set back in his preparation towards his fights this year in that he damaged his ankle and therefore will not fight until the latter part of the year. I hope to be visiting the Lincoln academy in March/April and we will also begin to conduct specialist courses such as hand wrapping, massage and pad-man in the coming months.

CLASS ATTENDANCE
This time of year tends to be a busy time for new arrivals to our academy and 2008 is proving to be no exception! Classes are busy and bustling and there is a great atmosphere and camaraderie. What is outstanding though is the retention of students over the years and it is great to see that the enthusiasm has not waned and that some of you more seasoned students are continuing your ‘education’.

In a show of appreciation for their dedication, commitment and longevity to Chao Phraya Muay Thai the following Nak Muay have been placed on our honours list – to be displayed shortly at Chao Phraya HQ
Kru Leigh Edlin joined us over 5 years ago alongside Assistant Kru Marcus Hill and both these guys have been by my side ever since and have fought a total of 9 pro fights between them so far. Both Nak Muay have gained titles, Kru Leigh is the WMTO professional Middleweight Midlands area champion and Assistant instructor Marcus was the EMF Amateur Southern area champion
Nak Muay and Assistant Kru James Khan and Nak Muay Kevin Hearn deserve a special mention here too as they have been with Chao Phraya since its inauguration in 2001. Kevin trained alongside me in ’98 &’99 when we were under Kru Byron Gibson’s Surprendre camp. James trained originally in London, under Arjarn Danny Kapoor prior to joining us. Both Nak Muay have fought professionally for Chao Phraya.
All the above mentioned have a wealth of experience within our team and are an asset and credit to Chao Phraya Muay Thai academies.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Sawatdee bii mai khrup! I would like to personally wish all of my students every success for 2008. My closing word for 2007 was ‘consistency’ and this is what I want you to concentrate on this year. Not missing a days training where possible, to train hard and diligently and reap the rewards of fitness and improvement. Whatever your aims are, if you simply turn up and commit to your training I will get you there that is my guarantee. Chock dee khrup!

CHAO PHRAYA JOINS THE R.A.F
Over the last year Kru Leigh Edlin has been privately teaching Muay Thai on R.A.F Cranwell base. As a result interest has been expressed in opening up a class on the R.A.F base. Boxing equipment, bags and a boxing ring have been bought by the R.A.F and the first class opens on Wednesday, February 20th 18.00 – 19.30.
In the mid-term it is hoped that Chao Phraya can develop and train a successful R.A.F Nak Muay fighting team. In the long term we hope to open doors for Military personnel throughout the UK to train in Muay Thai.

FIGHTER SQUAD TRAINING
Fighter training begins this Saturday 12th January & Sunday 13th January. Saturday will be fitness, technique & sparring at the St Ivo recreation centre from 10.00am-12pm. All Nak Muay are to attend and will be booked in this week. Sunday’s session will be track training at the St. Ivo outdoor centre from 10am – 11am. If there are any spare places I will open this up to students who I ascertain to be fit and capable.

Our first Interclub will be at K-Star Birmingham on Saturday 26th January. All Nak Muay are to attend and anyone nominated will need to complete the booking list in class.

KRU LEIGH EDLIN
Kru Leigh Edlin is now in full training for his return to the ring. Kru Leigh will be travelling to Thailand in March/April to continue his training and will also be fighting while out there. I have spoken with Kru Andy Thompson and a full rules fight will be arranged. Upon his return we hope to be putting him forward for an English title fight, which again will be full rules Muay Thai.
